Doors and Windows

mabscribe

In the before-times, I had a career that I adored. For twenty-five years, I worked in marketing and promotion for touring Broadway shows. Yes, parts of it were as awesome as you might imagine. But rest assured, there were plenty of challenges and frustrations. You know, like life in general.

Spring is the second busiest time for that business. Fall is the craziest—that’s when all the new tours kick off. But Spring is about selling subscriptions. My to-do list in March of 2020, just for one day, could span three pages. Along with so many others, I went from super-busy to …nothing. Go home. We’ll call you when we’re back on tour.

What had been a hobby, a diversion, an escape from the pressures of my day became much more. Over the two years I finished several short stories—and had one published. I finished a draft of the novel that had been sitting in my head for a decade. Would any of this have happened if I hadn’t been forced to abandon my first love?

Covid closed a door so I opened the window and started writing. I’m now realizing I should have said “Covid rang down the curtain” to keep in the theatrical theme. But since I’m using one of the greatest musicals of all time to illustrate my point, I’ll stick with doors and windows.
