Jumpin’ Jehosophats, as Granny Clampett used to say. I’m well and truly surprised to have been selected for a panel at Left Coast Crime in Tucson this year. For an author with only one published story under her belt, this is quite a thing.
I’ve attended conferences in the past, first as a reader then as an aspiring writer. I took copious notes, taking what the panelists said as gospel of how to succeed in this business. Now I’m going to be up there on the dias, and will have to come up with answers that are of interest to the audience. Gulp.
If you’ve ever watched the amazing “I, Claudius” series,* you might remember a scene in which Livia convinces the residents of Palmyra to proclaim Augustus a god, though he’s still alive. He says to her, “People will bring me offerings to cure their husband’s gout. Tell me, Livia, how do I cure gout, even in Palmyra?”
A panel assignment is not the same as being proclaimed a lowercase “g” god, but it does carry responsibility. I hope I can share some insights, maybe give one or two authors who are just dipping their toes into the pond a glimpse of someone who’s up to her ankles and, so far, enjoying things immensely.
*If you haven’t watched the series, do yourself a favor and check it out.
